AMPARO is a site-specific, experiential theatre piece that tells the story of the real Havana Club: The rum the Cuban government stole from the Arechabala family and has been distributing around the world in partnership with Pernod Ricard.
AMPARO is the story of a family who planted the seeds of a company and nurtured it through generations, weathering surges and storms along the way.
It is the story Ramon Arechabala who was forced to leave Cuba -- exiled. Who hid the recipe of his family’s rum, so that he could save it. And, eventually, sell it to Bacardi.
It is the story of Amparo, Ramon’s wife, who holds the story in her arms, body, mind, and heart to this day. It is a story of their love, their family, and the complicated, unbreakable bond with an island that was once home. A legacy that will not relent.
As long as there are beating hearts willing to tell it, story survives. And truth, eventually, thrives. This is the true story of the real Havana Club.
